Rv Barn/ garage build
After a brutal Iowa winter -Finally making some progress on our pole barn part of which will be purposed to hold our Solitude. We will eventually be selling our current house and plan will be to full time in Solitude that will be inside the barn while new house is being built. Went fairly big 100’x50’ with scissor truss on 16’ high side walls. 4 over head doors- each will be 14’ high x 16’ wide. The barn will be insulated and forced air heated but not cooled. Barn will have its own bathroom but also have 4” sewer/septic hookup. 50 amp RV service and of course water. We have 3 kids ages 9, 7,3 and the wife is a bit nervous living out of the Solitude for a year but I am quite excited for the opportunity to try (hybrid) fulltime rv living.
Poles/footers set this week. Will continue to post updates as things progress

Ryan,
When we built our barn, I was worried about heat build up on hot sunny days, so we bought a 36” box fan from Farm Tech. The builders framed and installed it as part of the build and our electrician hooked it up with its own breaker. The fan was about 400 and change. It works like a whole-house fan, to draw out hot air while drawing in cooler air from open windows and doors. During winter, we cover both sides of it with 2” foam insulation squares.

I have a question about winter months and heating. Do you plan on using the building (barn) heating system to maintain the temperature in the RV and the barn or are you going to use both? If both what will you do to ensure CO from the propane heating source in the RV doesn't build up in the barn. And as well what does your home insurance say about a propane heat source inside an existing structure (barn)?

Thinking further into this interesting construction and idea, what will you do about the sewer gases that will discharge from the RV roof vent while the RV is being used while in the barn. The idea is brillant, and I can see a trend arising where people have a RV storage/docking station called their house which is completely mobile when undocked in summer months.

When we will be living there I anticipate we will be keeping the barn between 60-65 degrees. We are having 2 large industrial sized Reznors installed to heat the barn (think entrance to home depot ect) and using electric sourced heaters in the RV - space heaters, fireplace ect but not the propane furnace. When we camp into the upper 30s outdoors I have not found a need to use the furnace with electric sourced heat. Same with hot water. I have found electric water heater is adequate for our needs 95% of the time.
As far as the sewer gasses- our coach has not yet held #2 . (With 3 young kids have not stayed anywhere yet or boondocked in an area without bathroom facilities) and we will use the bathroom of the barn to use for thatLast edited by Hwktlg8; 03-23-2019 at 08:03 AM.
