    Southern California to Nashville Advise/Thoughts/Recommendations

It looks like we will be taking I-40 from home in San Diego to Nashville on our way to the Rally this August. I was just looking for thoughts and ideas for this trip.

Any places along the way I should visit besides Memphis? Campground ideas are more then welcome as well.

After Nashville we will find someplace in Arkansas to camp before heading north to the Rally because there's a gaping hole in my travel map

    Thanks

There is a place I have been wanting to check out, so no recommendations.
    Sky City
    I-40, Exit 102
    Acoma, NM
Has some cultural sites and tours, but might be a little warm that time of year.

I assume you're talking about the Grand Design owner's rally 8/27-8/30/2019 in Elkhart.
From Nashville, you'd go north through Louisville and Indianapolis toward Northern Indiana. Arkansas starts 210 miles west of Nashville and very much out of the way.
I'd be looking for sights in Western Kentucky to see--like Mammoth Cave and the distilleries around Bardstown.

Yeah, I wasn't clear enough. I actually want to visit Arkansas AND Kentucky. I will catch Arkansas heading to Tennessee because I am taking I-40 as my main route but will go to Kentucky on the way to Indiana. Thanks for suggesting Mammoth Cave.

As a side note, there is no such thing as "very much out of the way"

If you into aircraft, somewhere along I40 is a huge museum. Its in AZ I think. Good fuel just west of ABQ. However I would suggest camping somewhere else. Also take a few side trips on old 66 along the way if you have time. Google it and you will find maps on things to see. Have a safe trip

We’re heading to Arkansas in July, on 40. One stop for us will be meteor crater, right off 40, near Winslow, then there is Cadillac ranch just west of Amarillo, bunch of Cadies buried nose down.

We spent a week in the Mammoth Cave area last year. Stayed at Motardier campground at Nolin Lake. This is a USACE campground, water and electric. Need to be a little picky, be we had a great water view. We also spent a week at Land Between the Lakes. Stayed in another USACE campground, Canal Campground. Again need to be a little picky, but lots to do in the area and we really enjoyed it.

Last year we stayed at Kentucky Horse Park water and electric only just north of Lexington. Visited some bourbon distilleries (Buffalo Trace was great) and Churchill Downs for a few horse races. You may want to stop at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green for a look on the way through. Nashville, we've stayed at Montgomery Bell State Park a couple times, its a state park with water and electricity only. There's some good hiking and outdoor activities in the park area. Grand Ole Opry was fun and if you go any seat is good in the venue no need to buy the more expensive seats as they have large screens to watch. Mammoth Cave mentioned earlier is a great place to see as well, large parking lot if you stop in on the way through, but the bus/trailer parking was full when we stopped so I pulled to the back/side and was able to find a place to park our set up.

Exit 108 on I-40 in Arkansas to Petit Jean State Park, It's about 20 minutes off the interstate. Call ahead and request full hookups. Weekends can be tough as most 50 sites are booked.
