    Payload Calculation

When figuring the ‘payload weight’ for a truck is the ‘Pin Weight’ of the fifth wheel also included?

Absolutely. The pin is going to be the largest contributor to your payload for certain.

Yup, pin weight, 5th wheel hitch weight, full tank gas /diesel, each persons weight, anything added to the truck since manufacturer as in an after-market grill guard or bed tool box, any tools or additional jacks stored in the truck - it all adds up as payload.

Ford assumes a full tank of gas, and a 150 lb driver for their door sticker. Other brands may or may not. Everything else since it rolled off the assembly line counts against the door sticker amount.

Don't go by UVW of the RV since that will increase as you load your RV and pin weight increase by as much 1000 pounds or more depending on the type, floor plan and how it's loaded.

In the old days 150 lb driver was included in truck empty weight but driver is not counted in empty weight (curb weight) any longer.

What’s included in empty weight is empty truck with full fuel. Payload is calculated by subtracting empty weight from GVWR

For example my 2017 F350 weighs 7977 lbs empty with full fuel and no driver or passenger. The GVWR is 11,500 so Payload limit is 3523 lbs (11500-7977)

Checked a 2019 manual. Doesn't mention gas, but as noted it instructs to subtract all passenger weight. No allowance for driver. Geeze, 2012 being the "old days" makes me sad. My 2012 manual does allow for the driver.

    GVWR-actual weight=Remaining Payload.

Regardless of what is or is not "included" in calculating the yellow sticker payload, this basic formula will take everything into consideration.

Even though my 1ton has a yellow sticker payload of 37XX pounds, with me, a full tank of gas, my spray in bedliner and tonneau cover, actual payload was only 3460. That was the remaining weight after 11,700(GVWR)-8240(actual weight).

So, whether the old days it included driver, tank of gas, or a McDonalds Happy meal, matters not. Math is, what math is.

The How to Determine Your Truck's Trailer Towing Capability thread will show you why the pin weight is included. Please check it out!

Also double check your actual rear axle loading. You will need to weigh the loaded rig. This needs to be at or below the GAWR - gross axle weight rating. Also weighing the trailer gives you the trailer axle loading. Hope this helps.

Just so you know you can be under your GVWR and over on the GAWR. Don't ask how I know - long story about my GN flatbed, a tractor, and having to pull over for an inspection and scale weights years ago.
