What is the Proper Grease For Travel Trailer Axles?
Makes sense, Rob - thanks! Though I must say that on my boat trailer ( before I rebuilt everything), with the bearing buddies, the grease would come out of the front seal that was “pressurized inward” by the spring in front of it. I never had it coming out of the back and have owned and maintained that trailer for over a decade.

Ugh! Just saw the other quotes of my post. Ever since my experience with the rebuild of my boat trailer axles, I am confidant that I’ll have no problems taking apart and repacking my 5er beatings. I will have to replace the drums with disk brakes one day, though!

Hi Holger,
Installing rear seals is a much misunderstood thing. (As you probably know) they have to be well greased at installation so that they will run smoothly on the spindle. When the OE hub installation is pulled apart, there is often a bead of seal material bonded to the spindle . . . indicating that the seal ran dry on the spindle and burned away the lips. If you have replaced the seals and made sure that they are well greased, I would have more confidence in using the zerk (if you think you need to). Use caution with the OE seals that were probably installed dry.
