Recommendations for the upper peninsula of Michigan.

    Hi guys,

I'm planning a trip to the upper peninsula of Michigan. I would like some advice on campgrounds I should stay at.

I will be leaving from Twin Cities in Minnesota I and returning to the Twin Cities. Any recommendations for campgrounds for the way there and the way back and while we're out there would be great. We generally like to keep our drive time down to 4 to 6 Hour A-day.

Thanks for your advice in advance.

There is a nice newer full service campground in Manistique, Manistique Lakeshore Campground. Only 50 sites but completely paved. Many of the sites back up to Lake Michigan.

There are many great state parks. A few that come to mind are: Porcupine Mountains, Tahquamenon Falls, Straits are all nice. Tons to do in the UP. Pack plenty of bug spray and warm clothes!

The Newberry Campground, formerly a KOA when we stayed there, is a great jumping off point for much sight-seeing. http://www.newberrycampground.com/ne...ampground.html
Many POI's withen an hour or two drive.

My wife and I traveled to the UP in early June 2017. We first stayed for 5 nights at Summer Breeze campground in Iron Mountain, MI. It was a nice family owned campground with full hook ups and cost us $135. I would stay there again. Next we stayed 3 nights at Tahquamenon Falls State Park for $77 for water & electric. I would not stay there again because of the mosquitoes.

I usually research everything online before making a decision. Unfortunately no reviews I read mentioned anything about mosquitoes/flies. I cannot emphasize enough how bad they were in many places during this time of year. Tahquamenon Falls had a lot of mosquitoes. When we were there as soon as I stepped out of the truck they swarmed me! There were several places we visited that they were so bad my wife and I couldn't wait to leave! Many state park gift shops sold baseball caps with a mosquito embroidered on the front and they also sold mosquito nets to wear over your head if that gives any idea of how common their problem is, LOL.

Wow, is that where it happened? I've been to Newberry many, many times for vacations, deer hunting, and fishing. I've been fortunate to never have vehicle problems while in the UP, just enjoying the scenery and Solitude.

Yep, that was the place. We were staying at the KOA there.
