The hitch head is easily removable @ 40 lbs. The hitch head tilt/swivel @ about 25ish lbs. is also removable by removing the large center pivot bolt. A little more work but not a big deal. It is a good opportunity to clean and re-grease as well.

    Dan,
Actually the hitch plat Wt is 43# on the 2900 series unlike the 2700 series. According to the tech specs. That how I came up with the 3# difference.

No problem with clearance. My wife watched to make certain and I was able to go a full 90. Much further than I will go in real life.

Between the clearance, light weight, easy removal and ride, I won't be looking to anything else.

I bought the Reese hitch and got it from Ford. The trick is to order online though fordparts dot com and you can get up to $200 off retail price. Here is a pic of my $3.50 hook up guideClick image for larger version.

    Thanks for your reply.
We are seriously considering going with the Andersen after much research. Which way do you have your coupler installed? And do you have a tonneau cover installed on the truck? Trying to determine if we can do a retractable tonneau without causing clearance issues with the rails.

I'm running a B&W Patriot 16K hitch on rails. Never had a minute's problem. But there again, we don't travel far and wide.

If you're going to be towing a lot and going in to hilly campgrounds, the slider is certainly warranted. B&W products are also very popular and are extremely well made.

Know this is late but I went with the Resse Sidewinder. Being a new 5th Wheeler hauling with a RAM 2500 Tradesman Short Bed truck I was uncomfortable with the trailer weight moving back on the truck frame/bed/suspension as occurs with a slider. The Sidewinder moves the pivot point from the kingpin at the hitch point to the kingpin box. With the pivot point moved back 22" you can use a standard hitch versus the more expensive slider. Do not have to worry about getting out of the truck to deal with a manual slider or if the auto slider engages correctly. I can actually achieve better then 90 degrees with the truck/trailer and keeps the downward weight of the trail in the center of the bed. Also do not need to worry about a lube pad for the hitch, you just use a silicone spray lube to assist in connecting to the hitch. Only maintenance is to check the torque at the kingpin box and wedge on a regular basis.

If you ever go to a long bed truck you can still use the Sidewinder or if you want or need to changed the pivot point back to the hitch you can remove the wedge and insert lock out bolts to prevent the pivot at the kingpin box. Only time this was necessary was when the dealer needed to move the rig for service. I have seen some forums where people complained about hooking up being a problem but I have had no issues to this point. The tolerance for hook up is narrower but you can learn to correct for this quickly.

Ball to rear, coupler forward. That provides for maximum clearance. It also puts the weight over the axle. No cover yet, still thinking about it.
