    Under bed storage support?

Now that I'm retired the boss WH has given me a list of things to do on our 337. She said, hey when I lift the mattress up I have to support it with my head to get stuff from underneath. She has asked for a support to hold up the mattress. It already has a gas shock but the mattress is heavy. I said why not just a 2x4 to hold it up and the response was "you can do better than that! Go ask the forum!" So anybody have any good ideas on supporting the plywood and mattress to enable activity without manually holding it up with one hand? Thanks in advance for ideas.

    Hi Pete,

Everything you ever wanted to know about . . . I had a conclusion for this line but can't post it here .

Stronger struts or additional struts or change the geometry of the strut angle. All in this thread . . . https://www.mygrandrv.com/fo...521#post187521

    Pete

Tell her you asked and we said" keep using your head", then run like the wind.

Stiffer shocks is the answer as Rob has noted above.

So I guess a 2"x 6" is out of the question?

I upgraded my mattress and had to go the Rob route of upgraded shocks and brackets. Like he says the geometry is everything. I thought I would need two pairs, but by changing to mounting locations I was able to get by with one.

Actually this strut problem had me working on a solution for some time. And just recently we have started using an adjustable length broom type handle which works better than anything else.
Try it, you might like it !!!

If you want a cheap way out.
Simply screw a 1/2" bolt thru the 2X4 and the front of storage base about midway up on one corner. Then simply rotate 2X4 UP to support bed and DOWN to close.

Hardest part is position of 2x4 to touch floor and right height to support mattress.
Even struts can lose pressure over time requiring more $$$ or maybe injury??
This method never fails and bolt is hidden by mattress.

I am rolling on the floor just thinking of the engineering challenges this can bring up and all the shopping and fitting of shocks. Our answer was to cut a 2x4 the length we needed. I appreciate the little worthless shock GD supplies us, but under a real mattress. Not the midieval torched device GD supplied. I think a bit more support is needed than most of those skinny shocks can give.
