Kayak
Looking to buy a kayak and where to store it running down the road in our 303.
Has anyone stored it on the back?
Not sure how I would secure it without a custom rack.
Thx

Could you strap the kayak to the ladder?

Have you thought about an inflatable kayak? We recently purchase our second inflatable boat, this one being a kayak and we love it! (Sea Eagle 385 Fastrack). They all ship from the same place. Our plan is to put a roof rack on the top of our pick up and carry two. I have seen others do it with the front and rear tied down.

I carry two 13' yaks on top of my long bed quad cab in J cradles. Works fine but loses about 1/2 to 1 mpg overall depending on head wind. I used to run them flat down on the bar padded with foam and it worked fine as well and was perhaps a bit more stable. Had to buy the J cradles for hauling them on a Rav4 and jeep so now i just swap the whole enchilada over to the truck when we take them with the 5er.
You will need to set them a bit more forward over the cab to maintain enough swing room for the front of the trailer. Long bed comes in handy for that reason. You get to watch the front of the yaks to see if they are flexing/moving that way so it's not a horrible idea anyway.
My .02 is go inflatable unless you are planning some serious paddling trips. So much easier to deal with overall. And yes, tie downs front and rear are necessary. Buy good ones! Mine came with the Thule J cradles and have held up well for a couple years.
You can hang them on the back of the trailer IF you buy/build a custom rack and they are no more than 11' long.Last edited by C&H Conner; 08-21-2015 at 04:39 PM.

X2 on Sea Eagle. Got my first one over 40 years ago, now have the 370 and my wife just got the 340. Store easily in the basement, are quite rugged (I paddle mine over beaver dams and drag it with a passenger over beaver dams. Love these but not a "true" kayak. Inexpensive also.

Great ideas, thanks all for your input.
Speaking of kayaks, google Gaviota, CA for scary shark attack on kayak fisherman.

Look at the www.rvkayakracks.com website for vertical rv kayak racks. They are a little pricey but look really cool. Plan on getting one for my 303RLS .
I did buy the kayak rack from rvkayakracks.com and couldn't be more pleased. Check out my avatar with the kayaks mounted on the back of our 303RLS.Last edited by Blacksmith; 09-20-2015 at 09:04 PM.
