Towing 337RLS with 2016 Chevy 2500HD Duramax 6.6L Crew Cab Standard Box

Is anyone towing their 337RLS or similar weighted FW with a 2500HD Crew Cab Standard Box (not long box)? We have the 6.6L duramax & 3.73. Our main concern is we will be bumping right up against the max GAWR for the rear axle and the GVWR for the truck. Have the truck already and it's brand new so replacing it is not an option. Do not have the 337RLS quite yet, but supposed to take delivery very shortly. Will be using Pull rite slider hitch and air bags. A little late to be realizing this, but wondering if we are setting our selves up for major issues, or if the truck can handle it. We will be towing on the (mostly) flats in Texas about 5-6 times a year.

We don't have the Chevy, but we do have a 2013 Ford F250 6.7 SD diesel. Short box, crew cab. Pretty sure we're at the max or a bit over on weight, but can't get the hubby to go to the scales. We don't have bedroom AC or washer/dryer and try to load that room lightly, and keep the basement weight as low as possible. Most of our travel is in Kansas with occasional trips to the surrounding states. We've had no problems at all and really love the combo. If we had it to do over we'd probably get a 1 ton, but see no reason to trade for one unless we get a larger 5th wheel in the future. I think you'll be just fine personally.

We have a truck similar to yours. I'm happy with the trucks performance and I think you will be too. When we load it fro a trip, I just pay attention to not put too much stuff in the bedroom.

There are several 337 owners towing with 2500 GM products mostly diesel and I am sure there will be plenty of feedback offered. And yes, most are probably over that magic payload sticker number (if they have one on the door pillar calculated to stay within the 10,000 GVWR DOT rating) but still under/maybe slightly over the rear spring/tires rating when heavily loaded. Our combination is very close to yours (if you get the 337) our 303 pin weight is shy of 400 lbs. less than the 337 and we also have the superglide hitch. When we were nearly fully loaded on one trip last year (back seat full too) we were over the truck magic payload # but 300 lbs. under the rear spring and nearly 500 under the rear tire ratings. Our spring ratings are 5200 front and 6200 rear with the tire rating just shy of 3200/tire. We don't have air bags and rides/tows very well with stock setup.

I do believe a 1 ton is better suited for the 337 and that the 303 is probably a better choice for the 3/4 ton, however, I've pulled my portly 337 over 20,000 miles without issue with my 2500. I never expected the pin weight to get so high.

Side note, the way GD lays out these trailers, it's very difficult to mitigate the heavy pin weight with mere loading. There is not significant storage space that can actually hold heavy items. Moving some clothing or games or whatever from the front to the rear will likely make minimal difference. My pin weight is 23% of Gross loaded weight.

    YMMV

    Hi Paul,

Ours is likely more now, Last summer we were still rookies and the rally was only our 2nd or 3rd trip.

WOW - thank you everyone for the quick replies! This is all really helpful. We were thinking the first thing we'd do is go to a weigh station and check the weight, but unfortunately that's after the money dump. So this is good info. Didn't know we could get all those weights at a rally. We'll look into the Texas Rally. Any other suggestions or experiences much appreciated!

Oh, and we don't plan to add a washer/dryer combo. This will be our second camper, first fifth wheel, and just didn't think to check the pin weight over the rear axle until the 11th hour.

Jim--my wife needs to go back to being a rookie ! Our GCW was just short of 20,000 and the 303 about 11,500. No wonder it took 2 weeks to pack !!!
