Bug mesh for vents
Good morning everyone! While not new to camping, it is our first RV (Momentum 328M). The dealer told us we should put mesh or something other guards over our vents to prevent bugs from hanging out...we've seen some of the pre-made covers, etc. Are those the best option? Do we really need to be worried about getting bugs in the vents? What about the covers/mesh getting too hot from exhaust, etc? Thank you everyone for your help!

At the GDRV Owners Rally last year, the advice from the Atwood Service reps was to NOT put any kind of mesh or screen over the intake/exhaust on their products.

I had Mud dauber block off enough of exhaust vent for my heater and cause it to over heat and since I put cover over the vent I haven't had any problems nor have I had any overheating problems.

I put a mesh screen over my furnace exhaust after watching a wasp crawl in and out one day. I seldom use the furnace as I don't do much cold-weather camping and the electric fireplace keeps things very toasty, but so far it hasn't caused any problems for me.

I have the screens for the water heater, furnace, and the fridge vents. I guess it depends on where you live cuz I think it was a waste of money on my part. My neighbor has a heartland and does not have any screens. We were talking one day about it and I realized that he never had any bugs or anything get into the vents that he had to clean out. So most likely a gimmick to get you to spend more money.

Have had them on all my trailers and never had bug problems. Know people without them that have had mud daubers cause issues. Cheap insurance.

Hi Dan,
The Atwood reps were specifically quizzed on this since many in the audience were surprised. Their answer was "restricted air flow". I'm not saying that I agree with this . . . just reporting the manufacturer's position. Their advice to keep mud daubers out of the water heater compartment (and the back of the fridge) was to use moth crystals. Don't know what you would do for the furnace.

We had them on our last rv for six years, no issues. First thing installed on our Reflection when we bought it over two years ago, again no issues. We have lots of wasps and mud daubers here, they like to make nests in our awning arms, so I think they would have caused an issue if we did not cover the vents.
