So it's not specifically designed for long range detail With that said, I captured a few images from the videos so you can check out the quality:

Edit: After looking at how these images posted, the plates are difficult to read. However, on full screen images, it's pretty straight forward.

In this final image, even though the sun is in the foreground, I should be able to read the plate clearly. BUT the reflection off the dash board is wiping out the clarity of the plate number. I need to do something to reduce the glare.

All in all, I'm happy with the quality of the videos from this camera.

    Jim,

Did you use the Rexing viewer to do the screen captures? I just did and I'm not impressed with their tool. I can pause the video on-screen with Windows Media Player and see things more sharply. There has to be a better tool out there that will do a screen capture, grab all of the information, and save it to an image without dropping pixels and compressing it to garbage. I just don't know what that tool is...

Rob, I used the Microsoft snipping tool with no issues.

    Jim,

Thanks for the screen shots . . . I think your picture resolution is better than ours. I am still trying to figure out how to grab a single frame from ours, on my Mac.

How is your camera fastened to the windshield ?

A small, flat mount is fastened to the windshield with 3M double-sided adhesive. The camera dove-tails onto that and is easily removable.

    Jim,

Your picture resolution is definitely better than what I am getting. I guess all 1080P cameras are not the same. Surprise . . . surprise.
This is a screen capture jpeg but is pretty close to the best resolution that I can see on my laptop.

I am a firm believer that a dash cam is a good thing to have with all the craziness going on out there, but I think I will be looking to upgrade to the camera that you guys have.

The last truck had a different model, but similar features. this one has much better resolution. I mounted it behind the mirror on the passenger side so it doesn't interfere with my field of view. I routed the wire down to the dash via the headliner and roof column. Then I wired a 12v power socket to an upfitter switch for power that is only on when the ignition is on.

[QUOTE=Cate&Rob;90396]What do you see as the benefits of the Garmin dash cam over the others?
    They are considerably more expensive.

I have a Garmin RV GPS which I am pleased with, but I am less impressed with their backup camera and its video resolution.

    Rob[/QUOTE

It's a personal thing, Rob. I have a Garmin RV-760 GPS with backup camera (the video on which is not impressive) and love the GPS. I just don't like the way their dashcam(s) mount. The one I have is out of the way and much less obtrusive than the Garmin.

We have blackboxmycar in 4 vehicles. Front and rear cameras. Hard wired with movement sensors front and rear. Good picture. My son had one and someone stopped in the middle of a 4 lane road and backed over his hood writing off his 1 yr old Honda Civic . Driver tried to blame him but when he was informed of the dash cam he changed his tune. Sent video to ins. Co and adjuster and it saved a claim and his deductible. Paid for the camera and then some. That's when I ordered the other 3.

Any updates on this thread? It's been a while. I want to replace my VanTrue N2. Based on this thread, I'm looking at the Rexing V1 3rd gen, 4K with up to 256GB storage. But I'm very open to other recommendations.

    Thanks,
