I like your concept, might consider the same.

It has been 2 (or more?) years since I first did my fence post mod, seemed Lowes had the fence post, had to special order the caps. Home Depot (my first choice in home improvement stores!) didn't have either. Wonder if I can have HD order it this time around, if I don't follow your lead and mount brackets on the ceiling of the storage bay ...

It looks like they make three different models that span different lengths.
This is a great option, this is what came on my Momentum, only fixed length.

That is a neat mod. I went and read that thread.....

Some mentioned holes, to vent the post, and some mentioned holes to drain residual water. Has that been an issue?

1- I think a couple hole ON TOP would minimise water intrusion, and keep it from getting FUNKY.
2- It could be mounted on a SLIGHT slope, back to the cap to drain.
3- I seems that the hinging of the cap would not work properly. (re: depth of cap edge) without trimming the edge of the cap. or shimming out the hinge on the post.
You might be able to cut the edge off of the hinge side of the cap, and put the hinge on the side of the post to the cap's top.
    Does that make sense?
That is hard to describe in words. Sorry. Once I gather the materials and play with it I'll post some pics.

The hinging of the cap will work. Do not push the cap all of the way onto the fence post and attach the hinges. The cap must be pulled part of the way off the fence post before attaching the hinges. Just put the cap on the post and then slowly pull the cap off until it will swing to one side. Mark that location and install the hinges. I have done two with hinged caps on both ends. It is easier to do than to describe.

When I built mine, rather than try to use the hinge, I took a different route. Two lock hasps and small, non-locking carabiner clips on each cap. Secure, easy on/off, didn't have to worry as much about positioning of cap to keep hinge functional. Just a thought.

Did you use two or one lock hasps?
